Fab Morvan from Milli Vanilli
In 1989-90, Milli Vanilli were one of the biggest pop acts in the world, selling over 30 million singles from their debut album All Or Nothing, which featured hit songs “Girl You Know It’s True”, “Blame It On The Rain”, “ Girl I’m Gonna Miss You”, “Baby Don’t Forget My Number” and “All Or Nothing”. Milli Vanilli, who were Fab Morvan & Rob Pilatus toured across the world and performed over 100 arena shows in North America alone, featuring their signature choreographed dance moves and unmistakable fashion sense. They picked up three American Music Awards, one Grammy Award and even one JUNO Award. However, their success turned into infamy, as it was discovered that Morvan and Pilatus did not sing any of the vocals on their music releases. The media and public backlash was unprecedented and their Grammy Award was revoked (the only artist in Grammy history to have their Grammy Award revoked). Milli Vanilli’s music was banned from radio and even from its own record label catalogs, as class-action lawsuits ensued.
In 1998, Milli Vanilli recorded a comeback album, Back and In Attack, but its release was cancelled after Pilatus tragically died. The Infamous lip-sync controversy is regarded as one of the music industry’s biggest scandals of all time. For the last 30-plus years, the Milli Vanilli story has been viewed as a cautionary tale about seeking fame at any price. At one point in time, Milli Vanilli’s revoked Grammy Award sat in the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles on display, broken in two pieces as part of an exhibit.
In the fall of 2023, the critically acclaimed documentary “Milli Vanilli” was released, which reframes the Milli Vanilli scandal as tragic story about the exploitation of artists, particularly black artists. Fab Morvan says about the documentary, “It’s what I wanted for a long time. To tell my story. You knew the headlines, but you didn’t know the story”. The Milli Vanilli Documentary is currently streaming on Paramount+ and has already won various film festival awards. In August 2024, the Milli Vanilli Biopic movie “Girl You Know Its True”, was released, where The Los Angeles Tribune calls it their “Movie of the Year”! “Girl You Know It’s True”, the movie is currently streaming on Apple TV+ and soon to be streaming platforms. Most recently, Milli Vanilli’s music has had a huge resurgence, due to the hit Netflix TV Series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” Three of Milli Vanilli’s hit songs were featuring throughout the series, prompting fans from the past and a whole new generation of new fans, to make two of the songs the most Shazamed songs in the world that week! Subsequently, three of Milli Vanilli’s songs have re-entered the Top 50 Music Charts for the first time, since doing so 35 years ago!
Milli Vanilli mania is taking off again, with TikTok a blaze, as a new generation of instant fans embrace the catchy pop hits of Milli Vanilli, while they now lip-sync these songs themselves. The Milli Vanilli redemption story continues as Livestar Entertainment Canada and 777 Concerts Inc bring Fab Morvan aka MILLI VANILLI, back to North America as part of the 90’s Dance Mix Tour, to sing these hit songs live in person!
